Cybersecurity Act of 2009

I found myself wondering this morning about the direction our country is going after reading an article on FoxNews.com. “Senate Bill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet”.

Wow, a Senate Bill that was introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller earlier this year has been brought back to life with a few word changes. It is said that this bill would allow the government to protect American Citizens by allowing the President to have the power to shut down all private internet networks. According to Sen. Jay Rockefeller “the legislation was critical to protecting everything from water and electricity to banking, traffic lights and electronic health records”.

My very first thought about the idea of allowing the White House to have supreme power over the internet may be a little extreme but not totally unwarranted. After all we taxpayers now own car manufactures and finance companies why not add on health care and internet rights. I believe if nothing else that the government having so much control over our daily lives has already and will continue to remove our right to free speech. If you remember back just a few months ago during the presidential elections in Iran and the control that their government had over the internet and media it’s insane for us as a country founded on the rights of the people to take two steps back. Neda was a young woman that was killed for what many people in this country died for and that was to have a voice. I believe we have allowed our government to evolve in the wrong direction.

I am not an extremist by any means but I do enjoy my rights. And although the internet is used for many critical infrastructures in this country those should be controlled by those in charge of them.
